Rezoning approved with nature buffer

The Atkins Planning Commission approved a rezoning after working out a compromise with objectors, at its monthly meeting Tuesday, Aug. 7.

The change was from R1 to R2 residential to allow a manufactured house to be located at 209 NW 14th St.

Fletcher and Ola Shannon and Annette Lemley objected to the rezoning, which is on property adjoining their commercial property, Lemley Funeral Home and a shopping mall. They agreed to the change after the Huffmans agreed to a 20-foot nature buffer between their lot and the adjoining lots. The vote was 4-0-1, with Chris Fryer abstaining. Voting for it were Charles Baker, Janis Davis, Kathleen Napier and Elmo Bizzell. The ordinance must be approved by the City Council at the meeting Tuesday night.

The commission also accepted two permits. They were to:

*Marvin Childress, for a deck cover at 806 NW Fifth St., $1,000; and

*Rayburn Pearce, for a carport at 1301 W. Main St., $695.

All members were present, including Chairman Charles Baker, Kathleen Napier, vice president; Janis Davis, secretary; Chris Fryer, and Elmo Bizzell, and permit inspector Albert Thatcher.
