Sheriff money again on court agenda
The financial problems of the Pope County Sheriff's Office are on the agenda of the Pope County Quorum Court again this week.
Sheriff Jay Winters is requesting three appropriations for the detention center he says are needed to finish the year, based on the trend of the first eight months. The requests are for $6,500 for medicine, $33,000 for food, and $12,000 for other medical needs.
(These items were for the Budget Committee meeting Tuesday night after the Chronicle and Times deadlines and will be considered at the regular Quorum Court meeting Thursday night.)
A previous request for detention center funding was rejected by the court. The court also rejected his requests for replacement patrol cars. Opposing justices cited the county's tight budget, while some justices voted for the requests.
Other fund requests on the agenda include $7,500 and $1,165 by the county Election Commission for elections.
County Treasurer Donna Wall listed $49,177.07 available for appropriation from the General Fund as of Sept. 30.
Other items on the agenda are:
a request by the Pottsville Fire Department to be allowed to have a special election for levying fire dues on real estate taxes;
a supplemental agreement between the county and the city of Russellville in connection with the River Valley Regional Intermodal Facilities Authority, spelling out terms of board members;
distribution of $5,642.10 in Arkansas Game and Fish Commission fines to school districts in the county, based on enrollment.
