Loose ends tied at board meeting

The Atkins School Board in a special meeting Tuesday night voted to hire Sherry Simpson as sixth grade English teacher.

Interim Superintendent Dain Duval said that two teachers have asked to be released from their contracts, but the board has not released them yet, so some more hiring may be necessary.

Twelve students were accepted into the district under the school choice umbrella.  Some were already attending in Atkins and some are new.

The board voted to award the student insurance to the same company that has provided it for the last several years.  The insurance covers all students and is secondary to the students’ private insurance.

The board voted changes in the three student handbooks (elementary, middle school, and high school) as recommended by the Arkansas School Board Association.

The board was informed that the school board association has increased the number of study hours recommended for board members.  They now are expected to attend seminars for twelve hours a year each.

Dain Duvall, who has been serving as superintendent until Boyce Watkins takes over on July 1, thanked “all the teachers for the help they have been to me this year.  I really appreciate it,” he said.
