Dover News

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!

Dover City Council agreed last week in a called meeting to allow the Dover Lion’s Club permission
to use Lovelady Field as the site for a big-top circus.
It was noted by the council that this is the first time in many years that a circus has found its way to our city. In the earlier years the tent was raised on the square in Dover. The Culpepper and Merriweather Circus from Oklahoma is scheduled to put on two shows on Tuesday, April 8, at 5 and 7:30 p.m. Officials from the Lions Club had spoken with Mayor Bradley and noted that they would like for some of the younger school children to be able to watch the elephants raise the big tent. Mayor Bradley said that he felt this would be good for the city.
The council agreed to raise the salaries of the deputies and officers
in the Marshal’s office. They adopted a pay scale which gives those in the department graduated
increases as they advance in rank. The scale shows that the marshal’s salary will be $31,470; lieutenant, $25,480; sergeant, $23, 920; corporal, $22,880; deputies,
$22,484.80; part time starting
salary, $20,800; part-time sergeant working 1 day a week, $4,368.00 and part-time officer working one day, $8,320.00.
Aldermen Carl Wetzel said that he would like to add an extra $500 to each salary so that the Dover Marshal’s office would be in line with salaries of other departments throughout the county. It was said that the insurance
is paid in full for all those in the department who request the coverage. The aldermen said that the insurance adds a large increase to their pay scale. It was stated that the council would readdress the marshal’s office salaries in the future.
The council approved the low bids of Willis Parks and DCJ Construction for water system improvements.
Fireman Jonathan Isaacs asked the council for permission to apply for a 50/50 grant that would be used to purchase protective
equipment for the firemen.
A resolution was passed which allows the department to apply for this grant through Rural Community Development.
