Jr. Pirates seize 1st round of district tourney

The Dover Junior Pirates continued their solid season through the first round of the Junior High District Tournament with a 45-27 win over Subiaco.

The Pirates started the game strongly with a 13-9 1st quarter. The pace set, Dover continued to lead the game with a score of 23-15 at the half. The team gained even further momentum with a 37-19 score in the 3rd quarter. The team closed the game much as they began it with a final score of 45-27.

Colton Williams led the team in scoring with 12 points, followed by Ryan Ausbrooks with 8 and Austin Thomas with 8.

"I think we were a little nervous to start the game because it’s playoff time. I think the key to the game for us was really controlling the tempo and shaping the game to our style of play. Once we got some defensive stops in the third quarter, we really got rolling. Subiaco deserves some credit for playing with great effort. I am proud of our boys for winning 20 games this season," Coach Michael Bollman said.

Junior boys fight off Clarksville in 39-36 rematch

In their final game before the District Tournament, the Dover Junior Pirates were in fine form against a strong Clarksville team, narrowly taking a 39-36 win.

The pace of the game was set early with Dover holding a slim 12-11 lead. The team continued to hold a one-point lead at the half with a 20-19 score. Clarksville fought back and took a 30-28 lead. Dover rebounded and finished the game 39-36.

Jace Powers led the team in scoring with 13 points, followed by Ryan Ausbrooks with 8 points.

"This was a huge game for us. It gave us a chance to beat the team that gave us our only loss. We were shorthanded and everybody on the team stepped up to pull this one out and finish with a perfect conference record. I felt like we left every ounce of effort on the floor. We are playing our best basketball going into the district tournament next week. As long as we bring our intensity, I like our chances to win the district tournament," Coach Michael Bollman said.

Junior boys face little opposition from Subiaco

The Dover Junior Pirates had an easy time taking on Subiaco last Monday, cruising to a 58-35 victory.

Dover started the game strongly with a 16-11 lead in the 1st quarter. Dover furthered their lead to 31-19 at the half. The team continued their strong pace in the 3rd quarter with a 42-25 score before closing the game out 58-35.

JR Hale and Tanner Wright led the team in scoring with 14 points each, followed by Colton Williams with 9 points and Jace Powers with 8.

"We did a good job getting prepared for this game. I thought our defensive presence took Clinton completely out of the game. We controlled the game from start to finish. Jace Powers stepped up and guarded their best player and shut him down. Tanner Wright played very well and hit some big shots. We rebounded, defended and pushed the ball up very well. I can’t give credit to one player tonight, it was our best team victory. It also gave us the regular season conference championship for the second year in a row. We get a chance to get revenge on our only loss this year Thursday at Clarksville," Coach Michael Bollman said.

7th grade Ladies take 2nd place in tournament

The Dover 7th grade girls lost a close 24-22 match against Perryville in the final round of the Russellville Middle School Tournament.

Perryville set the pace early with a 7-3 score in the 1st quarter. Things would not improve in the 2nd quarter with a 13-7 score. Perryville shot ahead in the 3rd quarter for a 21-9 score. Dover gained a burst of strength in the 4th quarter, but was unable to win with a final score of 24-22.

Carlee Williams led the team in scoring with 14 points, followed by Savannah Pack with 4.

"I felt like we didn’t start playing until the 4th quarter and unfortunately it cost us. We were down at one point, 21-9, but in the 4th quarter we clawed our way back into the game and got it down to 2. I was very proud of how we kept our composure and didn’t quit. That enabled us to get back in the game. Perryville has a very good team, but we have been playing just as well the past month. Recently, I think we have fed off a 4-game winning streak and that gave us the confidence to feel like we could win no matter what. This might be the last game, but our girls have learned what it takes to win and how it feels. I am looking forward to coaching this bunch as 8th graders," Coach Heath said.

Jr. Ladies stung by Clinton Lady Yellow Jackets

The Dover Junior Lady Pirates had a difficult game against Clinton last Monday with the Yellow Jackets seizing a 24-15 victory.

The game began with a fairly close 8-6 1st quarter. Clinton leapt forward in the 2nd quarter to take an 19-11 lead. The situation would stay this way through the game with Clinton ending the game victorious, 24-15.

Kali Scott led the team in scoring with 8 points, followed by Whitney Worsham with 4 points.

"We battled tonight, but the bottom line is we didn’t stick the ball in the hole. We have to find some people to step up and score for us or it will be difficult to get a big win. We did play some great defense and our zone kept us in it. I thought we could pressure them more, but our zone did such a great job we just stuck with it until we had to get out of it. I take my hat off to Coach Cooper and his bunch. He does a great job with them and they took care of business," Coach Mike Heath said.

Clarksville stalls out senior Pirates in 69-57 loss

A powerful Clarksville team stood in the way of victory for the Dover Senior Pirates, who lost 69-57 on Friday.

The teams had a close 1st quarter with Dover falling behind 16-13. Clarksville widened the gap in the 2nd quarter for a 37-26 score at the half. The 3rd quarter was much the same as the previous one with a 48-38 score. The final quarter followed the same pattern with Dover closing the game behind, 69-57.

Leading scorers were Jacob Shatwell with 13 points, Trevor Cooper with 13 and Jonathan Philpott with 8.

"We were about as ready for this game as we could be. They are hard to guard because they shoot so well and are very quick to the basket. We played even with them throughout the game, aside from the run they made in the second quarter. Our effort is never a question, just if we can put the ball in the basket. We shot well from the free throw line (18-15), but didn’t get there enough. I was very pleased with the way we played; we were very balanced," Coach Michael Bollman said.

Jr. Lady Pirates build to victory over Clarksville

A hard-fought battle ended in victory for the Dover Junior Lady Pirates who scored an impressive 33-26 victory over Clarksville.

The team began the game behind, 10-4, in the 1st quarter. They advanced quickly to tie the game, 12-12, at the half. Dover seized a 21-16 lead in the 3rd quarter. The team held the lead for a final score of 33-26.

Jordan Ivey led the team in scoring with 11 points, followed by Jessica Ferguson with 9 and Whitney Worsham with 7.

"I couldn’t be more proud of these junior girls. They beat one of the best teams in the conference tonight and played like a true team. Coach Marshall does a great job with his team. 9th graders Jordan Ivey and Jessica Ferguson stepped up and had a big night and showed great leadership. Whitney Worsham was big on both ends with several points and steals. Kali Scott did her thing on the boards and was all over the place on defense. Then we had great play off the bench in Brandi Foshee, Kinsey Tarkington and Brittany Turner, with some big points for us. Others came off the bench and contributed as well. It was just a great total team effort. They truly deserved that win and they played like I feel they can play every night, they have that ability," Coach Mike Heath said.
