Memories of Days Gone By

35 Years Ago

(From the files of Feb. 28, 1973)

Coach Paul Anderson’s Red Devils are District 1-A South champions for the second consecutive year and are playing Holly Gove today in the state tournament at Jonesboro.

Duvall and Johnson Builders Supply was heavily damaged by fire early Monday morning. Exact cause of the fire was not determined but it is believed to have started in the office area which was recently relocated in the southeast wing of the building.

Jimmy Harold Harshaw, 16, of Dardanelle died Thursday at the home of a brother in Russellville.

Sheriff Bill Abernathy said that an elective water well pump stolen near Atkins has been recovered. A $500 reward has been offered for information concerning the theft.

Marine Major Donald R. Huffman, husband of the former Miss Marilyn L. Fields of Atkins, is attending the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA.

Johnny Burnett of Atkins was one of six Arkansas Tech students who attended the Midwest Model United Nations held last week in St. Louis.

Danny Chappell of Dardanelle will be evangelist for a revival next week at the Bethany Missionary Baptist Church in Atkins.

50 Years Ago

(From the files of Feb. 20, 1958)

It is not news, but for the records, Atkins has been in the midst of one of the most extended cold spells in recent years. Temperatures have ranged from as low as 14, and for almost two weeks, have remained near and below the freezing mark.

Luther Willock, aged 66, well-known Dardanelle citizen, died Sunday at a Dardanelle Hospital. He had served a long tenure as an auditor in the state comptroller’s office. He was the father of Mrs. Louis Berkemeyer.

Napoleon Ausler and his family of wife and nine children, were made homeless Sunday night when fire of unknown origin destroyed their farm home and contents.

The Red Devils Junior basketball team was a strong contender for the top honors at the tournament at Pottsville last week in which the senior girls team also participated. But Atkins was knocked from the top Friday night by Oden.

65 Years Ago

(From the files of March 5, 1943)

Just as spring seemed on its way, the temperature took a sudden drop Tuesday with all -time low-reading of five to eight degrees Tuesday night. Flurries of snow and sleet fell throughout Tuesday.

Rev. J. Kenneth Shamblin, pastor of the Methodist Church, will spend next week in Little Rock, attending a school of Personal Evangelism.

Miss Leta Darr has accepted the position of assistant clerk with the Selective Service Board at the Ozark National Forest Service building in Russellville.

The senior class will present Dotty and Taffy, a 3-act comedy in the school auditorium March 19.

The J. B. Strickland home was damaged by fire Tuesday. Fire originated on the back porch and burning through a wall into a bedroom.

Atkins won the county basketball tournament for senior boys Tuesday of last week, defeating Russellville 37-28 in the finals.

75 Years Ago

(From the files of March 24, 1933)

J. E. Henderson and his father, L. W. Henderson, who live near Atkins, will use a hoe in their farming activities this year that has been in use 40 years. The hoe is made of thick steel and was bought 40 years ago by Bob Henderson. It has been in the L. W. Henderson family 38 years.

Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Cheek have moved from the Mrs. Boyce Alewine property on Dover Street to the former W. F. Lemley home on Lemley row.

Mr. and Mrs. Malon Davis and son and Dr. and Mrs. W. L. Mason made a business trip to Ada, Okla.

A. W. Bullock and family are moving to Hector this week. Oliver Johnson and family are moving to the McLaren property vacated by Mr. Johnson. Mrs. Hawkins previously had rooms with Dr. and Mrs. Cale.

100 Years Ago

(From the files of March 21, 1908)

A new telephone line is being put up from Economy to Atkins.

Robert Hays and wife of Appleton have a fine baby boy.

S. C. Payne has been employed to teach in District 48 on Crow Mountain during the summer.

The city election will be held on April 7. A mass meeting should be called and the present official endorsed as whole and re-elected or new candidates should be put out. A town that has attained the importance that Atkins has, should and must have the best men possible men its local officials.

The Bledsoe Mercantile Co. believes in progression. They have just installed a shoe repairing machine in their harness and saddle shop and can now do first- class machine repairing on short notice.
